What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System.

The globally recognised English language proficiency test is divided into two categories: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.

If you are applying for higher education or professional registration in an English speaking environment, you can take the IELTS Academic Test. It reflects some of the features of academic language and assesses whether you are ready to begin studying or training in a foreign country.

The IELTS General Training test is for those who are going to English speaking countries for secondary education, work experience or training programs. It is also a requirement for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. The test focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts.

Millions of students choose to appear for IELTS because its scores are recognised by over 10,000 reputed universities and government organisations in at least 140 countries around the world.

Non-native students need to take English proficiency tests to study in countries where the medium of instruction is English.

Jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English. IELTS provides the best standard of international English testing. The exam aims to test your English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

Now that you know what IELTS is, we’ll tell you why a large number of Indian students choose the exams.

4. Practice mocks in an IELTS-like environment: The best way to prepare for any exam is to practice in the exam setting to give you those feelings. It would help if you considered joining an IELTS training institute to practice mock tests regularly.

No matter where you stand in your English language proficiency, we would suggest that you refer to our extensively researched and well-developed study material and practise mock tests.

IELTS Test Format

If you wish to score better in the exam, you need to understand the IELTS test format comprehensively.

From the types of IELTS tests to the different sections, we’ll discuss the IELTS test format in detail to give you an overview of the exam.

The IELTS test is divided into four parts:

IELTS Speaking: This is a face-to-face interview with the examiner that lasts between 11 and 14 minutes.

IELTS Listening: You will be required to answer 40 questions after listening to a 30-minute audio recording.

IELTS Reading: You will have to answer 40 questions after reading 3 passages in one hour.

IELTS Writing: This section is divided into two tasks – Task 1 and Task 2. While Task 1 in IELTS Academic is a short report of charts, graphs and map tables, Task 1 in IELTS General Training requires you to write a letter. Task 2 in both the types of IELTS test includes a formal essay. The entire writing section lasts for one hour.

Once you apply for the test, you will have to take the first three parts of the exam on the same day. The order of examination will be: Listening, Reading and Writing. These three sections need to be completed in one go without any breaks in between.

The Speaking section can be held either on the same day or a week before or after other tests. The test centre schedules this according to their preparation and arrangements.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, test centres across the world are organising IELTS Speaking Test on video calls. With other parameters remaining the same, you will be interviewed by English language experts on a video call.

Types of IELTS

Two popular type of IELTS tests are: Academic Test and General Training Test

It aims to test whether your level of English language proficiency is suitable for an academic environment or not. The test questions evaluate different aspects of academic language and assess whether you’re ready to begin training or studying in a foreign country.

You should take this test if you want to:

Study at an undergraduate level or postgraduate level anywhere in the world.

Apply for Tier 4 Student Visa at a university that is a Tier 4 Sponsor in the UK

It measures your English language proficiency in a practical, everyday environment. The tasks and tests are designed to judge your usage and understanding of the English language in both workplace and social situations.

You should take this test if you would like to:

Study or train below degree level.

Work or undertake work-related training in an English-speaking country.

Emigrate to an English-speaking country.

Get a job in your own country after studies.

Work in an English-speaking country for a professional organisation.

The IELTS UKVI Academic and General Training tests are suitable for you if you’re applying for study under Tier 4 Sponsor, Tier 1 and Tier 2 visas to the United Kingdom for immigration. Tier 1 Visa is for ‘high-value migrants’ from outside the EEA and covers entry of investors and Tier 2 Visa is for ‘skilled workers’ from outside the EEA with a job offer in the UK, Tier 4 is for the international students applying for a study visa.

The actual test taken is the same as IELTS tests for all other purposes and includes the same: content, format, scoring and level of difficulty. Test Report Forms are slightly different in order to show that you have taken the test at an UKVI approved test centre.

This test is for those who need to prove their English Speaking and Listening skills as part of their application to UK Visas and Immigration for extension to family, Spouse or Partner visa.

This test is for those who need to prove their English Speaking and Listening skills as part of their application to UK Visas and Immigration for ‘family of a settled person’ visas.

This test is for those who need to prove their English Speaking and Listening skills as part of their application to UK Visas and Immigration for indefinite leave to remain or citizenship.
